"Print Your Own Fabric"
by Katy Widger
"This book began life as a handout to accompany the many workshops I gave on hand printing and painting on fabric. This greatly expanded, updated and revised version has become a workbook itself, and was completed in 2001 when I decided to "retire" from conducting workshops. It contains everything I used to teach in the workshops, and much more that I never seemed to have time to cover. In addition, this workbook covers discharge application and additional information about using thickened Procion MX dyes to print, paint and resist on fabric. It uses my own original rubber stamp designs to illustrate the various surface design concepts. " Katy Widger
From the introduction:
Printing your own fabric can be as simple or as complex as you choose. Using commercial fabric, fabric paint, potatoes and other ordinary household items, you can spend an afternoon or a weekend creating unique fabric for a particular project. Or you can invest in a few more materials for different effects and go at it in a big way, creating yardage for projects only yet imagined! Almost all of the equipment and supplies are easily available. You may already have a great many of them in your home. The only items you will certainly need to go out and purchase are the fabric paints and dyes themselves. But be aware that the process of printing your own fabric can be addictive! One idea will lead to another and each success will generate the desire to try it again, only this time with a new twist. Your collection of hand-made and purchased stamps will increase until you have a collection of many varied and original designs from which to choose.
I have deliberately chosen not to include instructions for particualr projects in this workbook, but instead hope to present to you practical, "how-to" information and ideas that will alow you to produce economical and beautiful original designs on fabric that will greatly enchance your fabric art.
